Mission

Funtastic Sports Society is a community-based non-profit group, run by volunteers who help develop sports and recreation in the North Okanagan.

Funtastic Sports Society recognizes that recreation and parks are essential to quality of life for everyone – supporting healthy, active lifestyles. We strive to improve the access to sports and recreation by:

  • Raising funds which are used within North Okanagan communities for the construction of sports fields and enhancement of sporting facilities
  • Advocating improved recreation within North Okanagan communities

Vision

On behalf of the Slo-pitch community, we propose building six to eight slo-pitch fields– complemented by other active and passive green space to be determined by the community.  The new parks would include permanent washrooms, dugouts, storage, office space and bleachers.  An assessment of land, location, field assortment and community need will determine whether change rooms/showers, concessions, permanent band shell, playgrounds, tennis courts and walking trails could be included.

Accomplishments

2008 has been a very busy year so far. Funtastic has purchased emergency emergency defibulators for all 3 arenas in Vernon. We have been actively involved with the Ford World Women's Curling Championship and have donated the use of our tables and chairs to the Vernon Museum and the Vernon Hosptial Auxiliary. Lumby Funtastic has donated $25,000 to the North Okanagan Community Foundation as an endowment scholarship fund for students of Lumby.

Defribulator
Funtastic purchased 3 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for the Wesbild Center, Civic, and Priest Valley arenas.  The AEDs were dedicated to the memory of Brad Letkeman who passed away during a hockey game at Priest Valley arena last fall. Since it's inception Funtastic has helped build 13 fields (the majority located at DND) and 5 playgrounds (Mission Hill Park, DND, Graham Park, Kalview Park & Hillview School) in the North Okanagan. Funtastic has donated over $120,000 to Special Olympics in Greater Vernon.

At the 2007 AGM, held in October, members of the society reserved $110,000 for future capital projects. This money will be committed to future projects as land becomes available.

In 2007 Funtastic donated funds to the following non-profit groups who helped put on the Funtastic slo-ptich tournament: Vernon Lions, TORL/Vernon Ringette, The Junior Chamber of Commerce, VSS Football, Seaton School Band and Vernon Women's Soccer. Greater Vernon Kidsport and The Vernon Hospice House were the receipents of the 2007 Funtastic Home Run Competition.
